Home » Our History Our History 1982 was a monumental year because with the presence of Br. Liakat Fazal, Br. Nisar Fazal, Br. Murtaza Rajabali, Br. Ahmed Alloo, Br. Shabbir Nathoo, Br. Nazir Jafferali and many others, "UNION" was born. In addition, because the community had grown considerably in size, the sports festivals were no more a summertime event only. Volleyball became a year-round community activity where players from as far as Toronto, Montreal, Indiana, Allentown and Vancouver all gathered under one roof for a tournament. In fact, a committee of 3 hosting cities was formed consisting of New York, Allentown and Toronto making it possible to have 3 tournaments in a year. In 1992, UNION celebrated its 10th anniversary and hosted its annual Easter tournament where 18 teams from all over the United States, Canada and Europe participated. This was an epic event. As basketball grew more and more popular in our community, our youths formed a Basketball team under UNION. In 2000, Union started having Basketball practices where Volleyball and Basketball would be played simultaneously at Francis Lewis H.S. In December 2003, Union Basketball proudly won the first ever Basketball Tournament held in Los Angeles, California under the leadership of Mohammed Khalfan and Imran Shivji. Most Valuable Player Zaheer Abbas Khalfan as well as other key players helped in bringing the trophy home. Today, we are proud to have more than 50 participants practicing every Friday night at Sportime. During the Memorial Day weekend of 2005, Union proudly organized the first ever multi-sport festival in New York under the chairmanship of Br. Sikander Kermalli, along with his committee members consisting of Secretary Br. Mustafa Shivji, Treasurer Br. Fazleabbas Pirmohammed, Volleyball Captain Br. Mohammed Habib, Basketball Captains Br. Zaheer Abbas Khalfan and Br. Taha Shivji, and Committee Members consisting of Br. Fayyaz Dewji and Br. Fuad Jacksi. During this historic event, 17 teams participated in Volleyball while an outstanding 12 Basketball teams participated. This event was simply a history in the making as Union held a grand tournament after a total of 8 years. The stars of yesterday shined as the veterans of Union formed a team to participate in the 2006 tournament. In 2007, Union celebrated its 25th Anniversary marking 25 years of bringing Communities together. Under the same Management, Union hosted its 25th Anniversary Sports Festival and this time, along with its Women's Association. This was the first time ever that a Ladies Sports Festival was organized in New York. This event was yet another Historic event which will be remembered for years to come. |
